I think one of the key variables here is whether you have your family tree filled out in FamilySearch. Out of the hard work of others, I do and now am seeing the connections quickly populate.
This, of course, is one of the reasons FamilySearch does this… it gets people to directly see their connection to living people perhaps even ancestors. I’ve just messaged a third cousin I wasn’t aware of on my dad’s side where I have done very little research. 🧐
I’m looking forward to this being a key part of our “RootsTech Ride Along.” (I’ll be getting another post out next week with details.)
Yes and it’s not just “a family tree” but the connection to the FamilySearch Shared tree that matters. The algorithm for Relatives at RootsTech only works if someone is connected into it. It has several billion in it so far (we’ll get the updated total soon), and chances are for Americans it’s possible.
Oh, fabulous. It's good timing for them to do an update. I've been thrilled to watch as more indexed documents are added and how they're sorting them into individual profiles (though not attaching them without human review.)
And by the way... YOU and I are 11th cousins through brothers in the Holmes line out of Buckinghamshire, England, in the 16th century. (I'd judge that a little squishy. Some bits earlier than the 17th century seem a little aspirational... but hey.)
I was delighted to see @Maureen Taylor posting about this in her latest podcast episode highlighting Elizabeth Swanay O’Neal’s participation in the event too. She’s in there, and my 8C1R. (And here I was SO pleased that so many of us were in the same generation, that dream is busted, lol.)
I looked on Monday and Tuesday and made an excel sheet of the 5th and 6th cousins and reached out to them. I don't think many are aware of the Connection being promoted. Not all people signed up for RootsTech are involved in the true technology of it. I did though get a few replies and possible connections to work with.
Relatives at RootsTech officially launch the 14th although the link and functionality were live before that for testing. There will be a lot more promoting of it over the next two weeks.
I think the issue is the age group. Those who are older are not doing all the check ins to see what is new every few days. Some just sign up and go to the classes. They are not looking for the add-ons being promoted before hand.

Fascinating I became aware of your passion this morning during a live presentation
I have 972 cousins so far that I can connect with from around the world. By the conference it’s usually around 5,000. Try it - it’s fun!
